People fear what they do not understand.

I told my parents about the furry fandom and they were hesitant at first (STILL a little skeptical that it's not all the stereotype), but they're coming around.

I got EXTREMELY lucky. My dad doesn't live at home and has memory loss so you can't really show/discuss anything about it with him, 'cause he doesn't care and won't remember anyway. But my mom-she throws herself behind my hobby 100%. She loves to hear about what fun my friends and I get up to at cons, and she brags to her friends about my new partial (and has defended furries in front of them before).

I think it's just that, while every fandom out there has its bad eggs and gross (a relative term) content, it's furries that are most often thrown in the spotlight- and that's because the fandom is so HUGE. There's furry stuff literally EVERYWHERE on the Internet. Therefore a) higher numbers of people in the fandom = a larger population of bad eggs to be had in the first place, and b) trolls dont have to look far to find something to mock. Hence, it's really not that hard for the non-furry to find the really cringy stuff and yell "hey, look at this crap!"

Also, this fandom has been around in prominence for, what, like 30 years? That's a long time for biases to form and for negative opinions to fester and become entrenched. Popular media hasn't done us any favors either- see Aberguine's (sp) "Furries in the Media" series on YouTube.

And then, well...there's those people who refuse to separate being a furry fan and being into beastiality...but that's another ball of crap right there.

Most shallow people want SOME category of people to look down upon. Furry fandom is easy to mis-characterize. So, once someone has a completely false image of it to disapprove of, that's easy. Of course, the version they disapprove of is fictional and bears no relation to AC.

The real reason? Hating on furries is/was fashionable. It's just momentum really. We're just a subset of nerds that people can fixate on, and then go back to thinking Krystal/Renamon/some other female anthro character is hot. And not feel cognitive dissonance.

Source - I *was* a channer way back before they went off the deep end, around the Scientology days. And I'm a frequent Something Awful poster.

Oh these answers are all wrong.  It's because the dirty part of the fandom is so loud.  You Google furry and bad stuff comes up.  People go right to that and automatically assume EVERYONE in the furry fandom is into sick stuff.  My parents trust me so they don't judge.  They know the bad part but understand every fandom/ group has a dark side.

It's kind of rude to tell other people that their answers on an opinionated topic are wrong. Your own answer could be far from the truth regarding how OP's brother feels about furries but we don't know that. It's why we make guesses as to why someone feels that way.

Guys, let's take it easy here, someone was just trying to give their thoughts on the matter this thread is trying to discuss, I'm sure Deceived didn't mean anything ill-mannered or rude, and I'm sure there was no intention to lessen anyone else's opinion, so let's calm down and move on

People have any number of reasons to not like furries.

Part of it is that furry can pretty much mean anything. And that ambiguity can be off putting. Some furries just like furry art. Some furries role play as furry characters. Some furries have fursonas. Some furries thing of themselves as the fursona. Some furries fursuit. Some furries actively attend conventions. Some furries don't actively do or say anything in the fandom. Some furries are attention mongers who are non stop active in the fandom. People tend to fear what they don't understand. People don't get what a furry is because...well frankly we furries don't really have any good answer to that question either. So of course that is going to make some people twitchy.

Of course you can argue degree of passion is true of everything. Not all video game fans or scifi fans are cosplayer's. True but at the least you can pin down that they like video games or scifi. You can't even say that much with furries. It's just such a wide classification that it's basically without meaning. Which I think is also why you see a bunch of subcultures within the furry subculture.

For some people the fetishy stuff is what they associate with it. That's understandable and it's part of the package. But having said that you have similar stuff in every fandom. So why are people so anti furries? I don't know that they are really. I think furries are more sensitive to it than most. I mean when I was a kid people mocked treckies all the time. And maybe it was because the internet was less of a thing but you just didn't hear the big outraged cry about how unjust it was.  I think nerds culture in general gets a lot of people mocking it. Tabletop Roleplayers, LARPers. Until a popularization happens. Like Wars and Trek and Cosplay very recently. Then it goes to a weird place of moving from subculture to being sorta hipster chic. So un cool it's cool. And then eventually it becomes just accepted and part of culture and in some cases like Wars and Trek even can become popular culture.

It's more often than not misconception, or that the person only hears of the worst. As well as simply labeling something as disgusting or wrong, in the case of your brother it being the Fandom.

The best option I'd recommend that worked in my favor exceptionally well, was finding out why they viewed the Fandom in such a negative light. After finding the reasons as to why, I show-cased my own reasons and other reasons as well, that the Fandom wasn't exactly all that they thought. I know for a fact the Fandom has helped with many charities, brings countless people together, and not to mention I've found more cases than I can count, of the Fandom saving lives. Due to depression, or even some local furs helping another out, whom was in a bad home.

That would be my best guess as to help people not be quite so judgemental of the Fandom. I wish you the best of luck on it!

I don't know if you've been hurt, failed, or got your rear end kicked. But It's moments like that, that determine who we are. Moments like that are difficult they challenge you and force you to make hard decisions. But that's what makes us stronger.

To reference Plato, imagine three prisoners trapped in a cave so that they can only face the wall of the cave. Imagine the wall of the cave covered in fettish art. Behind them sits a fire. Between the prisoners and the fire, there are fursuiters grinding on each other, casting the shadow on the wall of the cave. Then one of the prisoners escapes from the cave, finds the non-sexual artwork and fursuiters dancing and having fun rather than dry humping. He returns to the cave to tell the other prisoners that he had just experienced the entirety of what the fandom has to offer, and that the sexual side of it is fairly benign. The other prisoners don't believe him and choose to stare at the fettish art and shadows of fursuiters grinding.

Good example, man. I really think you're totally right. Why? Because that happened to me. Some months ago, i used to frequent...the dark side. Using the alegory, i was facing the wall of that cave, and also i was that prisoner who came to light. But the others? Just ignored me, so there they are. Still in the darkness.

I think it's because some people saw that CSI episode,or 1000 ways to die or read that vanity fair article from way back in 2001 and allowed it to implant images in their head of what furries are and won't listen to any explaination that it isn't like that stuff at all.

It's not being a furry itself is the problem but how humans as a species have to follow social programming.  And if someone is interested in something unique or different it makes other people feel uncomfortable.

Some furries like r34, some hate it, but people need to realise that sex is sex and we humans need to be more mature about things in the world.

A lot of people link furry erotica with "Other things"  (beginning with B and ending in Y),  which is wrong and doesn't help people's anxiety!

But uneducated people just refuse to learn the truth or heed it.

People hate "furries" because society hates anyone who wishes to be different.  It's sad but true, and I long for the day where we are a more caring and loving society.

Furry means we love cartoon animals, and find them cute.  Normies, thanks to the media just blow that out of all proportion, sadly. Sad

Being unique and creative is a good a thing, and Humans need to learn this Smiling

in todays day and age people like to jump in on whats called a "band weagon" meaning that everyone jumps in so they look cool or think its right. other than that they hate the furry fandom becuase we are kinda diffrent from most fandoms, since we dress up as big fluffy animals but in reality we just want to make other happy. other cases is that we have that "other" side but every fandom has that "other" but we end up getting hit the most. our fandom however, is a big family so we stick up for one and other thats what they best part about it is we make friends and become a huge family! Pink grin

I think it's because people are afraid of anything different. I remember when i was growing up,that Dungeons and Dragons was considered evil and dangerous, but later on,seems it got accepted into the mainstream. I think in a few decades or such, furry will probably get accepted.

my fmily jst tes me or not being "NORMAL" as they put it because when i was 13 i came ou hem as gay and whn i was 18 i told them i was a furry now my dad didnt really care about the gay thing my mother and my sister went off on me how i have aids and will die a sad sick fag and well they still hold it against me but me saying im a furry my family did the good side of the community research on it and they still abolish it beacuse it is considered not normal to most and linked to mental issues according to doctors so when i buy animal stuff fur from work or watch anime with talking animals i get threatened with being homeless if i do not quite and mary a nice girl and have kids. i tell them to shut up im am an adult its my life i feel "NORMAL" and free to be me. so to be funny my sister knows i hate animal crultey and abuse so when she went on a trip to a renicance fair she bought me a real fox's tail and gave it to me and got mad when i asked why she did that. so people believe if you dont fit their "NORMAL" you are less then what you can do and who you are so when i see haters i say "you do you honey boo boo and ill do me dont like it go away i dont have to please you i am me and proud" needlessly to say i made a front licences plat for my car of a full moon and a purple wolf saying furry pride in purple letters. I work at a joanns and on saturday i meet two furries and i held them get fur for a fur suite i was so happy cause i felt like i was not alone.

Your family may be a little hard to deal with a for bit, but they'll get used to it and even if they don't you can be happy about the fact that your honest to yourself and your family about who you are.

There's nothing wrong with being yourself.

It's good that you have friends to hang out with, but remember you also have the wider community too.

When I joined the brony community years ago, my parents called me as a "gay pedophile" and that really hurt my feelings.

Eventually they stopped nagging me about it, but never really got used to the idea, and would always tell me to remove posters from my walls, in my house, which I live in on my own.

I've since left the brony fandom for other reasons but, I find that parents are just really judgemental about things they don't quite understand.

My mom was begging me to "come out" as being gay because I liked My Little Pony, but for her sadly, I wasn't gay.

Be happy in who you are, and don't let people judge you for being unique.  Smiling
